By sponsoring a fundraiser, or helping in other ways, civic organizations bring the skills, talents and creativity of their members together to help raise the funds necessary for Cross and Bars Juvenile Detention ministry.  Your efforts enable kids in the City of Richmond whose lives have been affected by poverty, fatherlessness, neglect, abandonment, abuse and crime to hear the Gospel and get the counseling they need while incarcerated, so that they can learn from their mistakes, resist peer pressure, and determine to lead a new and productive life.

The descriptions below are a few of the many ways your organization can help:

Sponsoring

Sponsor a Cross and Bars Juvenile Detention Ministry charity event.

These could be anything from small to large, and might include such ideas as holding a Brunswick Stew fundraiser, a walk-a-thon, community golf tournament, a fish fry, a used book sale, or any number of events - use your creativity and leverage the strengths of your membership!  These events are a huge help to Cross + Bars, while helping some of the most broken youth and families in your community.

Give Christmas gifts for the kids!

Christmas is usually a lonely time for kids in juvenile detention centers.  A great way for a civic organization to show the kids some love from the community is to purchase an individual gift for each kid.  Items as simple as a a nice sweatshirt, book bag or similar items can provide a gift under the tree for each kid on Christmas morning.  The Chaplain must pre-approve gift ideas with the Detention Center Administration, and the same gift must be given to each resident.  The number and sizes of sweatshirts, etc., can be provided once the gift idea is approved, and as Christmas draws near.

Christmas, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day cards for the kids!

Christmas, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day cards for the kids!

An act of love that is appreciated is to furnish each kid with two Christmas cards, envelopes and stamps at Christmas, a Mother's Day card, envelope and stamp at Mother's Day, or a Valentine's Day card, envelope and stamp on Valentine's Day for the kid's to give to their mothers.  These allow and teach the kids to show appreciation at these times, and are a blessing to their family members as well.

Carnations at Mother's Day and Valentine's Day for the kids!

The gift of a simple carnation to each kid to give to their mothers on mother's day and valentine's day not only allows and teaches the kids to show appreciation, but is also a blessing to the child's mothers.  These kinds of gifts go a long way to showing the kids that we care about them, and helps to open them up to hearing the Gospel message that we bring.
